Under the organization of Xizang geological bureau, a field excursion to Tibet (or Xizang) was held in August in 2002. Led by Dr. LS Chan, 22 members started a long march from Gulmod to Lhasa along Qinghai-Xizang Highway and then Sino-Nepal Highway westward to Xigaze. The highlight of the trip included the visit of the following geological interests:

- the ‘third pole’ – Qinghai-Xizang Plateau

- two of the three holy lakes in Xizang: Nam Co and Yangzho Yumco

- Yarlung Zangbo suture zone

- Xigaze ophiolite

High: The team reached the highest altitude of the trip - Tanggula Pass, 5231m

Salt bridge: Road work maintenance at Dabuxun salt lake - 50km north of Golmud. Workers use salt (the white material on trucks) to repair the roadway which is the dry lake bed. Note the salt crystal in the foreground.
Glacier: Glaciers at Nachitai

Quicklunch: A quick lunch at road side.

Fossil: Fossil hunting at Yanshiping from Jurassic limestone and mudstone which yield braciopods and bivalves.
Snowlotus: Let's share the happiness and satisfaction with Dr. Chan for his success in negotiating a good price for the ‘snow lotus’ without suffering from the effect of the high altitude.
Naqu: Horse racing held in Naqu in August is the important festival for the gathering of Tibetan people at the north Tibet.
Railway: Qinghai-Xizang Railway under construction. Bridge columns are being built over Toutou River - one of source rivers of the Yangtze. This section of Toutou river is situated in a rift valley.
Tanggula: Intermontane basin and Tanggula Mt in the background

Fengfoushan: Red beds at Fengfoushan
Fengfoushan: Rainbow after hailing at Fengfoushan

Tundra: Tundra in summer

Sunrise: The first sun ray on Jurassic volcanic rocks of Kunlun Mt.

Namco: Nam-Co (4718m), 70m long and 30m wide, the second largest salt lake in China, is located in the Nyainqentanglha mountain range.

Nyainqentanglha: Nyainqentanglha Mt (7111m) is the highest peak of the mountain range.

Malei: Prayer flags - a worship to gods of mountains
Potala: Potala Palace, Landmark of Lhasa, in the evening

Unconformity: Situated at 40km north-west of Lhasa is an unconformity. Beneath the unconformity are the Cretaceous sedimentary rocks and above it are late Cretaceous to early Tertiary intermediate-acid volcanic rocks.

India plate: Along the south band of Yarlung Zangbo river is the Himalayan Mountains which belong to the Indian plate.

Sheep lake: Yamzho Yumco in Himalayan Mountains was a tributary flowing northwest to Yarlung Zangbo river. During Holocene, elevation of the region dammed the river to a lake. Hydroelectric power is generated by the 800m difference of the lake level and the river level.
India plate: Along the south band of Yarlung Zangbo river is the Himalayan Mountains which belong to the Indian plate.

Ultrabasic: South of Xigaze is Bainang village where grey-white rodingite veins occur in serpentinized harzburgite. This is the ultrabasic rock of the mantle material in Xigaze ophiolite.

Pillowlava: Pillow lava, the upper part of the ophiolite, observed en route from Bainang to Xigaze.

Pillow: A closer look at the pillow lava
